Joannes Gregorius Dusser de Barenne was born on June 6, 1885, in Brielle, Holland. He received his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1909. Before coming to the United States in 1930, he taught physiology at the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht. He also worked as a psychiatrist at Meerenberg Asylum in Holland and neurologist at St. Antonius Hospital in Utrecht.
